Abstract
This is a review as well as a supplementary note on Daizhenxue De Xingcheng by Professor Qiu Wei-jun, and three topics which were ignored by this book are discussed. First, the complexity of the “kaozhengxue” scholarship in the 18th century China is clarified before we discuss how the characteristic of Dai Zhen’s scholarship had an unusual impact on the scholars of the late 19th century. Second, when we talk about the beginning of the “Daizhenxue” (the study of Dai Zhen’s scholarship), Liu Shi-pei is a critical person that should be mentioned. Japanese scholar Professor Kawata Teiichi of Kansai University discussed the case of Liu in his research paper. Third, other Japanese scholars also suggested interesting and inspiring points of view in analyzing the spirit of Dai’s scholarship and the position of Dai in the intellectual history of the late imperial China.
