Abstract

This paper presents the development of the political consciousness, identities, sentiments, political genealogy, and socialist beliefs of the left-wing women in the 1950s Taiwan under the White Terror, including Hsu Chin-Yu, Chang Chin-Chueh, Feng Shou-E, and Hsu Yueh-Li, as well as their relationships. These women started developing their socialist thinking and actions from the perspectives of families of origin, female destiny, and the conditions of female workers. Having experienced unequal pay and excessive work hours themselves, these women had initiated demonstrations and labor slowdowns. They were all influenced by the ideological trend of socialism in the Japanese colonial period and after World War II, and their discourses demonstrate the inseparable relationship between political concern and female identity. According to them, only through the comprehensive transformation of the social structure can women’s situation be improved. The thinking development and actions of these political victims highlight the sentiments and political genealogy of left-wing women.
