Abstract
-
This article represents some reflections on the contemporary relevance of Confucianism as touched upon by the “Lapland Manifesto of Confucianism,” proclaimed by three Nordic Sinologists Jyrki Kallio, Torbjörn Lodén and Matti Nojonen in 2021. It sets forth a comparison between this Nordic Manifesto on Confucianism and the Manifesto on Chinese culture proclaimed by the four 20th-century New Confucian scholars in 1958. Moreover, this article discusses three issues touched upon by the Nordic Manifesto, namely, (a) the Confucian concepts of “self” and “self-cultivation,” (b) the relations between Confucianism and democracy and (c) the contemporary relevance of Confucianism. It concludes by indicating that in sync with the sea change in global geopolitical order in the 21st century, the Nordic Manifesto of Confucainism is timely and pertinent
